Gray marine 4 - is there a replacement?

The engine needs a rebuild but he can't afford the $7K they want. Is there a substitute 4 cyl car motor one can use as a replacement? This probably sounds like heresy to some but it is the only way he will be able to afford getting it going, unless you know of an engine rebuild in So.Cal. for a lot less.
