I recently purchased a 1932 Chris-Craft Model 301 Runabout hull# 18135 with a Gray Marine Model 6-63 serial# 3093. The most I've been able to find out is, the engine is a 1929 Pontiac modified by Gray. I can't find a manual anywhere. I'm looking for tune up specs as well as the care and feeding of the engine. Of particular interest is the use of the oil resevoir attached to the intake manifold. Can anyone help?

Very interesting find- Speltz Real Runabouts Vol# 2 page #180 shows the 6-63 Gray as stock engine in the 1931 18' hull. 63HP turning a 12X13 prop. The stock motor listed in the 1932 year is the 55HP Chrysler 4 cyl turning the same prop; CC P/N 7509. The 18' Hull serial numbers started at 18000 in 1931. You may well have a "left over" 1931 CC Model 301 registered in 1932. 1933 Gray SN's started with #10,000 which further suggests your CC 301 to be "early". |

Thanks for clearing up one of the things I found confusing. According to the person I purchased it from and a letter from Chris-Craft to one of the previuos owners dated 12/31/1975, the actual model year is 1932, but a copy of the Boat Equipment Record is indeed dated 7/24/31. Also, the Sales brochure for the 1932 Models for Chris-Craft only lists a 55HP 4 cyl Chrysler for the 301, no 6 cyl. Thank you for clearing that up.
At the risk of being a pest, do you know where I might be able to find a manual for the engine. The only ones I can find for the Grays are for the Continental L Head. The motor in this boat is a Pontiac Split Head.
Thanks again for the inforamtion. We are having a great time learning about and using the boat. It runs like a dream.

Rob, Andrew here at OME has a sustantial resource of manuals available. Contact him direct for his list. Try the Clayton NY Antique Boat Museum library at ABM.org also. Andrew can give you the address of the current Graymarine parts supplier in Oshkosh Wi.I've heard the Gray 6-90 of that era was a Studebaker block- Gray must have done some shopping during that period. See top of page 105 in Engines Afloat Volume #1 by Stan Grayson. This auto based series started in 1927. Grayson reports that all the Dunkirk Richardson Cruisers were powered by the 6cyl gray converted Pontiacs. Reported that Gray purchased the Pontiac engines in lots of 20 on a COD basis.Erd and Hercules were early suppliers also. |

I have a 1950's (?) model Marinette 28' Cabin Cruiser with a 4 cyl, Gray Marine engine, model 70, eng. # K2131. Can you help me find the year of the engine and maybe a parts supplier? Thanks!
