Does anyone have one of these little jewels? |

...I see it says "grey enamel finish". Presumably that is what was on this three cylinder Model T with "self-starting" gear. Does anyone have a modern reference for this grey enamel?

Does any know what that thingamjig is aft of the flywheel. Is that the "self starter"? Does anyone know how this would work? |

Robert, This engine looks the same, except it doesn't have a mag.

Keith, thanks for those. From the dust that can only be in a museum storage area!? As for the self-starter, Richard, I see the engine base extends out around the flywheel to support the "air crank", so presumably it was not quite as simple as being "taken down intact and installed on another motor..." Still, what a piece of engineering, I'm still puzzling over how to machine a crescent shaped cylinder and piston; must have been a U section with removable cover. Hand-lapped to fit no doubt! My respect for Gray Motors increases daily. Add my name to the list of seekers! |

What an interesting mechanism. I assume that it just turns 180" under air power and then the clutch kicks out the starter? Must have been a design to try to get around the patent held by (I think GM) on the whole electric bendix drive starting system. |
