My engine has been running great for the last few years, thanks to some of you for your help in the past. However now my transmission is freezing and stops the engine. It started in reverse but now it is acting up in forward as well. There is enough oil but a mechanic told me to use the same oil as the engine oil hd-30.. I replaced the transmission with a good one i found by luck in L.A. A couple years ago but that did not fix the problem. When i leave the dock in reverse after afew seconds an aweful noise is growing and stops the engine. The other day when that happened i was in the main chanel, restaretd the engine with no problem and tried forward. Fully engaged the propeller was not turning like i was still in neutral. I went back to neutral, went low rpm and tried again. This time the propeller was engaged but almost right away the noise came back and stopped the engine. Went sailing anyway, called vessel assist, they know me well by now and i am trying to find a solution to the problem. Any ideas? Could take pictures to show anybody. Thanks. |

If changing the transmission didn't fix the problem I would suspect something with the prop shaft. Did you replace the gear on the end of the crankshaft that meshes with the internal gearing of the reverse gear? If not did it look OK? If it looked OK I would start with the boat. When it locks up if you put the gear in neutral can you turn the prop shaft? You should be able to turn the prop shaft by hand. Hope this helps Ernie |

Thanks ernie, Yes the prop shaft is free, i can turn it by hand easy and i changed the packing not too lon ago. I am waiting on a mechanic this afternoon. We will look at your suggestion and keep you posted. I think it must be an adjustment issue but i have no clue on how to do it. The new transmission was identical to the old one so i did not do any special adjustment.. Would it be ok to send pictures once we open it up. Maybe you will see something. |

ernie, i was wrong. It seems to be coming from the shaft. We looked at the transmission and it was acting fine. We ran the engine in forward and after a couple minutes the problem came back with a grinding noise coming from the back of the boat. The packing seems fine, do you think the bushing by the prop could go bad and seize the engine due to overheating.? We disconnected the shaft from the transmission and ran the engine for a while in forward and reverse with no problem. After the engine stopped it was hard to turn the shaft in neutral position. It came easier with time (or cooling?) Thanks for your input. |

Yup it could be but usually cutlass bearings get loose not tight. Unless it is full of stuff like barnacles or rope or some other foreign substance. The cutlass bearing is water lubricated. What is your boat? I am assuming that you have a stuffing box on the inner end that is attached with a piece of hose and some hose clamps. If this is what you have and the packing was seizing up it would tear the hose not stall the engine. Good luck with it Ernie |
