I HAVE A 40 HP 1971 EVINRUDE 40102B ELECTRIC START SKI TWIN. MY PROBLEM IS I WAS GOING TO CHANGE THE LOWER UNIT OIL AND I REMOVED THE WRONG SCREW. I LOOKED AT A DIAGRAM AND THE SCREW I REMOVED WAS THE PIN PIVOT SCREW NOT THE DRAIN PLUG. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE PIN PIVOT BACK IN BUT I CANNOT SHIFT INTO REVERSE NOW.DOE'S ANBODY HAVE A EASY FIX OR DO I HAVE TO DROP THE GEARCASE BODY ? I HAVEN'T TRIED TO START THE ENGINE YET. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE A GREAT HELP ! 15tollycraft |

Reomve the screw, drain the oil, have someone move the shift lever while looking in the hole with a flash light. You shold see the shifter fork moving around, use a pointed tool to line it up and install the screw. |

Did it work before you pulled the shift fork pivot pin? If so I sould suspect that the fork and cradle if it has one may be out of place or the cradle fell out of the shifter sleeve. The pic below is a 25 hp but yours is very similar. If your engine is fresh water it should come apart easily. The cradle is part number 23. Put OMC 40 gearcase and search in Google pics. Hope this helps Ernie

THANKS ERNIE; IT DID WORK BEFORE.NOT KNOWING WHAT I HAD DONE I HAD SHIFTED THE SHIFT LEVER IN AND OUT OF GEAR A COUPLE OF TIMES RAISING THE MOTOR, SO IT COULD VERY WELL BE THE CRADLE.I'LL OPEN UP THE BOTTOM ASSEMBLY AND SEE IF I CAN FIGURE IT OUT SOMETIME THIS WEEK. I'LL LET YOU KNOW THE OUTCOME. THANKS 15TOLLYCRAFT |

HI ERNIE; THE PROBLEM WASN'T THE PIN.I BOUGHT THIS BOAT FROM AN ESTATE SO IT HASN'T RUN FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS' I WAS MOVING PARTS UNDER THE FLYWHEEL CLOCKWISE (PLUG WIRES) AND GOT IT TO GO INTO REVERSE. WHAT-EVER THAT IS MUST BE GUMMY AND NOT RETURNING TO CORRECT POSITION FOR SHIFTING INTO REVERSE. 15tollycraft |
