Hi. I am looking at an MD1B for my boat. It starts and runs BUT has a cracked exhaust pipe elbow, and has rusted out a hole from the top to lower chambers in the exhaust pipe/manifold. Any parts out there ? Is welding the correct 'fix'. There is no thermostat in the housing either, so it will need that too. I'm on Vancouver Island BC Canada. |

There is an amazing stuff made by EVO-STICK called HARD AND FAST metal epoxy putty, that's if you can get it in Canada. It comes in a small plastic cylinder, it is grey with a black core. Grind off the effected area until you get to good bright metal, cut off sufficient putty to rebuild the hole, (make sure you hands are free from oil) work the two colours together then shape it in and around the effected area. You can wet your fingers to smooth off the outsides. Leave for 24 hours. It sets as strong as the steel. I have used it many times even on cracked blocks. It can be sanded, drilled and is not effected by heat, oil or water.. its magic .. really. Cheapest place to get your thermostat is Nautical Spare Parts Europe. It is the same thermostat as the MD1-2-3, and MD1B-2B-3B, yours is a 10hp engine with the only difference between all these engines is the size of the piston, yours being 3.5". Hope this helps. regards Eric. |

As a precaution and before you use your engine. This being a 1970-3 engine and not knowing its full history, my advise is to remove all the oil then add 1.8 ltrs of 50/50% mix of oil and diesel, run the engine for only 3 minutes, leave it to drain back into the sump then exchange it for fresh oil not forgetting to change the oil filter. This flushes out all the oil channels and cleans the gearbox as they are both interconnected and use the same oil. On four engines I have stripped down I found a build up of scale and rust in the cylinder block, this has restricted the flow of cooling water around the cylinder so check that all the passage ways are clear and running free as any scale getting into the thermostat can jam it open and your engine will not get up to running temperature. A well maintained Volvo Penta MD1B engine will last you another 40 years. Best of luck.. Eric |
