I recently came across an engine (saw, not bought)whihc I think may be a very early Van Blerck. This was a photograph in someone else's scrapbook so I didn't have a chance to have the photo scanned. Basically it is a small T-Head 3 cylinder four stroke, probably not much more than 30 inches in length, including flywheel. The engine has only one distinguishing feature (left) , which is that the water jacket on top of the cylinder head is covered by a single bronze (brass?) plate, bolted down tight with about seventy bronze bolts. Van Blerck did this on his larger four cylinders however the water jacket plates were on the cylinder sides. Has anyone ever heard of this machine. Cylinders are cast in one piece. Valve springs are exposed, which I think puts it about 1904-1910? I can't find it in any of my literature. Regards, Steve Fox |

Steve, I have never heard of any "small" Van Blerck engines in that early period. I think the smallest engine they made was the Van Blerck Jr. in the late twenties (not the style you are describing). Also the early Van Blercks I have seen were made with independant cylinders. Sounds like an interesting engine... and probably not made by a small shop. Is there any way to show us a picture...? Steve - Take a look at Lamb and Emerson ?? Also would you expect Peirce-Budd could have built a 4 stroke- they did some experimenting methinks. Bruce |

Andrew/Bruce Thanks for info. I didn't connect with engine owner. This may have to wait. Bruce: I gather you visited Hawkeye. Did you see anything you liked? Could afford? Regards, Steve |
