I am ready to purchase an M47S long distance. It purports to be a rebuildable core.

In pictures it looks about right. I am wondering what red flags I should be on the lookout for. Common problems that would be obvious without tearing it apart.

Regards, PK

P.S. I meant to say common CATASTROPHIC problems that would significantly increase the cost of the rebuild (like cracked block, etc).

Also if and how they can be spotted.

PK.

Look at the exhaust manifolds for obvious cracks. Check the outside of the block for cracks. Usually they will spread from the core plugs (AKA freeze plugs)Then pull the intake manifold and look for cracks in the lifter valley area. Also look at the water pump and oil cooler for freeze damage. Last but not least pull the oil pan and look for catastrophic engine failure like a thrown rod or broken crank. Remember to gather up all the pieces the seller may have taken off. Some parts are almost impossible to find nowdays. If the seller wont let you take the motor apart to inspect it I would be extremely leery about buying it.
