* Recieved this email From Chuck Franklin Richard I am having problems posting photos on the engine site and wonder if you could help. The Dunn engine is coming along slowly and should be ready for the next Calvert show with luck however I have the following questions; The timer operates off the rear end of the cam shaft however there is no lever to advance or retard only a 1/4 x 20 cast bracket, does anyone have photos of the connection? How are the main bearings lubed, as there is no crankcase bottom or side. There is no connection points for for any of the covers. I also need a photo of the oilers for the lower cylinder walls was there two oiler or one to a manifold? I have attached photos to this email which you can pass on if you want. By the way the only color I found on the engine was black which is the color I will paint it. * |

* I sent this info to Chuck its from a 1908 catalog and the oldest that I have and as I look at it its not of much use, Chuck's engine is much older and the oiling intructions are to maintain an oil level in the crankcase But his engine has open sides and no crankcase bottom ?? The rotary timer in 1908 catalog shows the timer Dunn used up to 1913, but is it possible that the first Dunn multis used the timer in Chucks photos ?? * |

I do not have access to any photos at work but I know that the intermediate years of Dunn production had the same timer Chuck's engine shows mounted directly on that end of the cam shaft. I BELIEVE it's just a bent rod that goes from the lever that's all the way forward on the cam shaft shown in Richards catalog print, then behind the cam shaft piveting in that casting that seems to be part to the rear cam shaft bearing over the cam gear connecting to the timer adjust lever. You had to reach down to adjust timing. I will look at my Dunn catalogue's after work |
