This engine was air-starting, hence the extra set of downward-projecting rockers for the starting valves. The first 175 hp four was installed in Fidalgo Island Packing Co.'s tender Cydonia in 1915, running until replaced with a 160 hp Washington diesel in 1937. It was operated initially on distillate, but later the Campbell attachments for burning stove oil were installed. A massive backfire generally resulted from air starting. Unwary bystanders on the float alongside Cydonia were thoroughly soot-blasted. If conditions were perfect, the engine could be started by flicking an igniter, I've heard. |
