Hi All .. I have a CLAE F6 in my boat that was discovered new in a Crate .! My question is after fitting in the boat it vibrates quite a Bit . At high or Low RPM its not bad , but at cruising speed it's a Problem . I guess that the Flywheel needs balancing . Are there any suggestions for balancing the Flywheel or even trying different engine mounts .?? Looking forward to your advice . .....Dave.. |

Before getting involved with the engine, make sure that your propeller blades all have the same pitch. You'll have to put the prop on a test jig ( I use my lathe) and take a series of angular measurements ( eg mid-point, 3/4 and the tip) of the blades. You'll likely find that one of the blades is out of whack with the others( I assume that you have a 3-blade prop). Fixing it can be done but it does take some skill. My experience has been that out-of-whack blades are quite common and people have learned to live with the vibration simply because the boats are old and the expectation of good performance is quite low. Another problem might be cavitation at the tip. One easy fix I have used is to turn the prop around, but this assumes that your prop does not have a taper fit. miro |

Hi Dave, I have two Clae F6 motors. One in the boat and one on the bench. They do suffer from vibration. As you can appreciate you have one big cast iron piston (weighing aprox. three and half pounds diplacing close to 800cc's) and a couple of dam big bearings holding the force of the piston, crank and flywheel. If you are going to balance anything take the three together and get the lot balanced properly. You should get it balanced close to 800-1000 rpm. Don't use rubber engine mounts or she will jump out of the boat. Regards Jim... PS If you don't like the motor I know where there are Blaxland twins but they spin the other way! |

Paul, You cannot buy original parts for the CLAE F6 nor F10's. However there is at least one set of patterns in circulation so occasionally there are new heads available for the F6. These are usually aluminum although the last one I saw was iron. The availability of these is quite sporadic and the quality can be variable. If you can find a second hand iron head then that is usually the best way to go. Although there are very few about now. You can use a Champion D Series Plug. I've used D16's and D23's in a twin F10. They are alittle bit short (threaded portion) but work fine. Good Luck Mark S |

Claes and Simplex singles need strong ,long engine bearers because as jim said thats one big lump of a piston thumping up and down, also shaft alignment is critical on all motors NOT MORE THAN .005". Timing is also an issue ,so make sure it is right near enough aint good enough, If you can talk Hardman and Hall into suppling an undrilled head a Simplex 6/7 single will fit |

Me again, I forgot to mention ,you have solid mounted your engine ? Rubber mounts dont work with fixed shafts, and they can create harmonics at certain rpms |

Original CLAE F-10 brochure lists KLG TML-50 as correct plug. It was an 18mm, 3/4" reach, 'hot' plug. There is some variety in the length of thread in these heads. Adaptors to convert holes to 14mm plugs are available. |

I dont like your chances of getting a Klg plug these days, but here is a list of plugs and makers that are compatible NGK, AP5FS Denso,MA16P-U Bosch,D9B AC,C85TC Champion,F11Y It might be noted that these are the same plugs that fitted the early Ford Cortinas,Escorts, Falcons,Mustangs,4,6,8 cylinder engines |

The KLG TML-50 is available in England. A company over there has had them re-manufactured. I have been using them in my CLAE F-10 without a hiccup. |
