I am attempting to convert a 4x5" vertical steam frame into a "half-breed" engine. The frame came without a cylinder. I am looking for something with a 3-4" bore, water cooled- preferably..., air cooled OK with a flange for base mounting a la Palmer cylinder. Don't need a piston since this a crosshead engine (will make) or a head as I plan to make this also, but all options considered. It can also be a horizontal cylinder so long as it has a flange on the base to bolt to. I'd rather get a "orphan" cylinder as opposed to getting a cylinder which someone may need for an existing project . Maybe something like off a Cushman binder engine or unknown auto engine with separate jugs if it looks interesting? } |

I have an extra cylinder off a Roberts Marine engine, It will need boring, There are no cracks or repairs $50 will include shipping At this moment I do not recall the bore size best guess is between 3 and 4 inches. If you have any interest I can measure and send pictures its a water cooled cylinder

Paul, I'm working on a pattern to cast Palmer YT-1 heads. If succesful I will have a cracked but repairable head aavailable, or a casting if you want one. If the head works out I will try a cylinder next, cylinder has been repaired. |

JB- I would be interested in both the head and more importantly, the cylinder for this project. Let me know when/if you get the cylinder cast. Your patterns look great! Good luck with the pours! |

Thanks Paul, the head was just placed together for the pictures, after checking and rechecking I started glueing it together. The next step will be radiusing, then placing it on a board. I mounted the old head in my mill on a rotary table, centered it, and checked dimensions. The pattern was placed in the mill and when drilling I added one percent for shrinkage. I'm using a core box I got from Dick Day, minor modifications will make it work. The pattern he had for the head was made to be poured from one side, a beautiful piece of work, but it didn't look like a Palmer head. Palmer split it in the center, half on each side of the board, I'm making mine this way. |

I looked over the frame today and it appears that I need a cylinder in the 4 to 4-1/2" range to make it look right. I had a 3" cylinder off another steam engine and it is just way too small to do it justice. I could go as large as 5" however if I had to by lowering compression ratio. |

Paul, I have some NOS 4 1/2" bore cylinders from Easthope that are flanged with water jacket. The machining was never completed ie. the holes through the top flange for water transfer to the head and the head bolt studs not drilled or tapped. The engine they are for has a 6" stroke. Would this work for you?.............Joe |

Joe- That sounds like it will work AOK for me. I saw some Easthope pix on the net and so far so good. Send me pix of what you have and price off list. |
