I think that Brooks was primarily a boat builder (mostly kit boats) ... and like many other boatbuilders they probably "labeled" various engines as their own. I have 1912, 1914, and 1917 Brooks catalogs and they show various "Brooks" engines, including "Brooks Universal" and a "Brooks AeroThrust" outboard. The catalogs do not show an engine like the ones above... the two cycle engines in the catalogs appear to be Detroits... although it never states that in the flowing prose that proclaims the virtues of the engine! Looks as if Brooks who sold mainly kit boats took the best price from engine manufacturers to equip their line. Page 18 in the Boley Blue book shows a Brooks (circa 1908)offering type"E" 3HP identical to a Thrall- Fishback in an ajoining ad- also a detroit firm. |

I also have a tiny Gray that is almost identical to these engines. It has Gray Motor Co cast in the flywheel. There are several ads for it in one of George Boley's books in the 1905 time frame. |
