I thought you folks might want to see some photos of a lovely little Wright - The Valveless. She is currently in my shop and will go into a putt skiff when that is finished - someday. She is complete and not stuck with compression. Cheers Dave |

Sounds good... I have a Wright Valveless too. Your photos didn't post, maybe they were too large, must be under 40Kb. Try again or email them to me and I will post them for you. |

Abm, Thanks for posting these photos, always nice to see these old ones, read the names in lists but good to match the engines with the names ! Wright Motor Co. of Buffalo was listed in 1904 Marine Buyers Guide. Also listed in Hiscox 1906 Mfg list. Any history on these engs ??? |

* Bruce, I've been hoping for the same appearance ! Some notes - I have reference to Wright Valveless Buffalo N.Y. back to 1904, there are six mfgrs in my files Named wright and it's been difficult to separate the references and I have never seen an ad from this Co. ? Nothing to etch in stone yet but I'm of the opinion that Nichols teamed up With Wright around 1908-09 and may have been a Nichols involved in eng mfgr in Connecticut ?? I have reference to Nichols ads in 1911 and 1915 and am trying to get a scan of each when I can locate the exact publications ?? Buffalo, New York the states second largest city built some great Old Marine Engines ! ** |

Thanks Richard, I recently had one of each-the Nichols and Wright had the same style ornate tag as the red engine posted above. The Wright had more conserative tag and was actualy all nicholed finish. The Nichols and Wright now is in Bill Wolf's hands and the Nichol plated Wright valveless is going into Herb Green's motor canoe.. |

Great engine - like to hear more about Herb Greens Motor canoe - the wife and I are just finishing up restoration on a 1911 20' EM White motor canoe - It has a Dubrie 5 horse I have the original engine - also picked up one of the blue crate engines with shaft packing and prop. The Dubrie isn't as slick looking as some engines - but it is a four stroke and a real work horse - |

I also have an old Nichols & Wright valveless. Single cylinder. Looks to be in good shape & has decent compression but no ignition. Can anyone direct me to any sort of literature on N & W engines such as this? There is what appears to be "points" in the form of a metal tab that grounds to a lobe on the crank. I am assuming I can hook up an old coil, condenser & battery to try to light it off one of these days but I'd like to know a little more first. Thanks and Kindest Regards, Tim Podgwaite |

Tim, I think you'll probably have more success with the ignition if you use a buzz coil. The modern version is tried and true. The timer on your engine fires on make, whereas an automotive type ignition fires on break. miro |

There was a Nichols Machine Co. opened in 1904-06 era in Waltham Ma. I have a 12 piston engine developed by them for Naval use during the '30s. Wonder if that might be the same Nichols associated with Wright. Nichols made machinery for the watch industry plus milling machines, etc. Many patents. I know very little of my wobble plate power plant. Would appreciate any information about the Nichols engine. Google Axial Internal Combustion Engines for these crankshaftless engines types. Thanks,David |
