I have come across an old Regal 8 hp gasoline engine. It was once used in a pilot boat on the western coast of Norway. According to the former owner, the engine was replaced with a 16 hp Rubb semidiesel in 1929. The nameplate has no year of production, but the production number is 6569. Is it possible to find the year it was made by using this number? If anyone can help me I am very grateful. David Knutsen, Karmøy Norway. |

David, Is it a single cylinder or a two-cylinder? What else does the nameplate say... is there a model number? I doubt if anyone will be able to date the engine from the serial number... but if you can detirmine what model it is you can get the approximate date by detirming when that model was produced. I have a 1927 catalog that shows the largest single cylinder engine as a 7HP Model EA: 5-1/4" bore by 6-1/2" stroke. The smallest two cylinder engine is the 8HP model NB: 4" bore x 4-1/2" stroke. Can you post a picture? Regards, Andrew

The motor is a 2 cylinder. I have measured the bore to be 4 1/2 ".have not checked the stroke yet.It is in fairly good condition after all these years. It is going to be restored by me and i am really looking forward to start on this job.The carburetor , magneto and the oiler is missing but if it is hopeless to find original parts I will use something else from the same period. Thanks for any help.

David, If it is 4-1/2" bore than it is the Model "UB" at 10HP, 4-1/2" x 5-1/2". See catalog pics below: Carburetors, magnetos, and oilers should be fairly easy to find. It is the cast parts that were specific to the manufacturer that are most difficult to find. What else does it say on your nameplate? Maybe someone else will have additional information. Regards, Andrew

Andrew. Today I have taken off one of the cylinders and measured both bore and stroke. Bore: 4 1/2" Stroke: 4 1/2". The nameplate says: Regal Gasoline Engines Manufacturers, Coldwater, Michigan, U.S.A. H.P. 8 No 6569 The former owner says that as far as he can remember his father told him that the engine was replaced in 1929 , but brought to Norway around world war 1 and has been stored inside the boat shed loft ever since. Regards David.

David, Well.... the specs don't match the catalog info I have... but that isn't too suprising. The engine looks more like the 10HP Model UB (as shown above) that the 8HP Model NB. The early builders were known for changing bore and RPM to acheive a higher rated HP. Maybe your engine is earlier than the catalog I have the that block was later rated at 10HP as I show it. Although the model UB has a 5-1/2" stroke not 4-1/2" as you have.... Maybe someone else can help out. Regards, Andrew |

As far as I am concerned , its not about buying and selling to make money .Its about saving little pieces of history . and the places and times in which they were made and used. Because if you dont know where you came from, how do you know where your going? Todd. |
