I recently picked up a little Defiance Iron Works inboard marine engine. What is known about this company? I have pictures but they are too big for this site.
I have pictures here: http://buzzcoil.brinkster.net/Defiance/page101.html

Thanks! Denis Rouleau

It would be interesting to know how many Defiance engines were made in Chatham. My guess is less than 500 engines. My understanding is that the 1905 and some 1906 motors only had the "DEFIANCE" name tag on then but from the end of 1906 on, a Canadian Gas Power & Launches Co. brass tag was also added to these motors. Richard, this one seems to be identical to mine, and less than 75 serial numbers apart.

Anyone else has a defiance?

Were Defiance motors ever built under the name "Swift Motor Car Company of Canada" OR was this a project that never materialized?

As far as I know no Defiance marine engines were
made by the Swift adventure !

This is taken from my data base under SWIFT

" In 1910 Frank Mount of Chatham took over Defiance Iron Works foundry on Lacroix Street and reorganized it as the Swift Motor Car Company of Canada Ltd. Mount reportedly built a few Swift Cars in 1910 before giving the Foundry over to the Walker Motor Car Co. later that same year ".

Looked for info for years on this subject but never found anything more than this ?

The attached ad appeared in "Canadian Machinery" monthly during all of 1911. It suggests that Swift marine engines were built in Chatham, Ontario.

Thanks for the ad its the best evidence that Swift may have made marine engines that I have seen, although I have had swift in my data base for years they were always a maybe ! It would follow that the engine they may have made was a copy of the DEFIANCE ??

Unfortunately none of the ads show what a Swift marine engine should look like.

Thanks for this ad, Swift Will be a part of permanent files now. With all their optional engines available they must have been a very capable manufacturer, the engine in the ad is quite sophisticated in 1911. interesting to see who's design their engines came from ?

Good Stuff

The red engine above is a different lower casting on the name plate side?

Richard, I also wonder what is the use of the opening for some sort of shaft held by 2 set screws/bolts?

My guess would be for a reversible propeller lever.

I was not able to reach the owner of this other Defiance marine engine. I would like to know what the serial number is on his. Larry, if you see this please tell me what your serial number is on your defiance. Thanks! Denis Rouleau
