I'm about 3 years behind but I'm trying to catch up on the engine hobby work, another year or so I may be able to get back to my projects. These are a couple of cranks I did for friends, the single is an unknown that was worn and bent, key ways were waddled out. The twin is for a 2HP Buffalo, it had broken in the throw years ago, looked like it was acetylene welded. I re welded it, the rear section was cut from 1" to 7/8", I guess to true it up after welding. I build them up in the lathe, rough machine them, then grind them to size. My crank grinder was set up to turn between centers when I got it, no matter how little pressure you put it would tend to bow these little cranks. I bought two chucks and it seems to do a much better job.

I found a before pic of the crank, you can see the weld on the last throw, the output shaft is noticeably smaller.

The ground goes through a contact I made from a starter brush assembly. Four brushes on a brass slip ring. The trough keeps the argon around the crank, it gets hot enough that it would start oxidizing in the air. |
