I'm not sure how many folks here are familiar with the Ricardo Dolphin engine of 1904? Ricardo designed this engine when he was just 17 years old... Supposedly it was a very good marine engine due to it's steady slow running and high torque. It was also used in a car in 1908. A few months ago I got curious about how these engines would sound and operate and since I can't seem locate any video of one I decided to make a copy from an air compressor. I also thought it would be fun to put it in a motorbike since to my knowledge there has never been a Dolphin in a motorbike before... I can say it's a very smooth running engine.. you can read about the Dolphin engine here... http://www.oldengine.org/members/die...sc/ricardo.htm or here.... http://www.oldengine.org/members/die...sc/ricardo.htm you can watch some video of it running here.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oG2RSe3P20 |

Hi Kayak.. It's pretty much like any 2 stroke... the only differences are the Dolphin uses a second piston yo provide the scavenging instead of using the back side of the piston and passing fuel and oil through the crankcase. Also the scavenging is uniflow.. which means flowing from one end of the cylinder to the other... I made a couple of changes like moving the carb location and also changed the locarion of the spark plug and the combustion chamber... Mine runs really smooth and is very easy to start... Usually one or two pulls on the flywheel and it's running.. I'm thinking it would be fun to make one for a boat... |
