Just got this engine for free with another engine I bought. Looks to be a penguin maybe 4 or 5hp? Has a sprocket where the mag sits, probably not original, can anyone tell me what the original magneto would have been? |

Hi - The maggy sits forward of the crankshaft on the small base, which on your engine looks to be broken. Advantage of these motors is that the water jacket is removable, allowing the owner to chip away at the dreaded internal rust (until you chipped into the cylinder space!). |

So what type of mag did they originally use and is it couple drive or chain drive? Has orange paint underneath sliver, which is underneath green so guessing it was originally painted orange |

Hi - See http://www.oldmarineengine.com/history/Penguin/penguin_marine_engine.htm Shows in-line dog drive maggy. Removable for storage off-boat in a warm dry place conducive to health of magnetos. |

Is there a reason why it has a sprocket? I have seen some with them and some without them. |

I have seen two variations one with a similar toothed wheel joined together with a duplex chain and also the mag mounted above the cog wheel again joined by the single link chain in all respects a Ne bracket will need to be made as per johns suggestion Quinton |
