Reading through old info on Lockwood -Ash the Co. began as early as 1904 with a small two stroke and in 1905 printed their first 15 pg catalog. The second most significant production year was 1909, with what must have been a large capitol investment for engineering, design, equipment, tooling and facilities to come out with the engs mentioned above. The larger HP engs, the castings of the exhaust and intake manifolds, the first (optional) wet exhausts, and the familiar timer with switch. Any of these style of engines still around?? |

Richard, I have a 12hp L-A, serial # 12014, the 14th 12hp in that series, it looks to be a little later than this twelve, has a water pump like the 5hp in the picture. I have a 6hp, #60035, the 35th 6hp in that model. It looks a lot like the 5hp, different valve cage. I was told that L-A chose model numbers by engine series, a 24 was a 2 or 4hp single cylinder, a 68 was a twin cylinder 6 or 8hp. There are a few of these in our area. My 6hp is a model 46, I've never seen any info on a 4hp twin. |

J.B. This pic was posted by dick Gibbens some time back, its an early twin and from what I can see it has a piston water/pump,also has external water piping but it does look as if it goes into exhaust manifold??I'll try to find when they went from gear pump to piston type ?? Interesting about model numbers, I haven't seen any info on a 4 HP twin so far !! |

J.B. Looks like we had the same eng in mind, the cooling system allowed either wet or dry exhaust , I like that hand crank option ! |

Another difference,Intake manifold on 1911 is in crankcase, on eng above ,into cylinder base ?? How many more tries do I get to try to date J.B's Lockwood twin ??? |

Have been searching but After 1911 Lockwood-Ash ads are all outboards or the small engs, guess we'll have to find factory catalogs to help date this eng any closer ?? |

* Keith I think that with an input from many Lockwood collectors here we could figure out or attempt to anyway the serial numbers of engines and what tag shapes went with what series of numbers, with some advanced info like a factory invoice to substantiate mfgr date we could start to relate serial numbers to mfgr date ? Three shapes of tags--- Rectangular are oldest, these are what I have 1. 2. 3. 4. Oval Tags 1. 2. Square tags 1. 2. The numbers seem consecutive ? If anyone has trouble posting photos just give the serial number and tag shape ! * |

Thanks Richard, I will try to send my photos of tags soon. Can you send me a line with model number, serial number, and horsepower of the tags that you showed. Thanks, Keith Felder |

* If we can get many more tags or just the info from them on here I will make a chart and list all of them. Its been stated the the first numbers are the horse power and others are the number of engines made of that horsepower ?? Not sure how that applies as yet ??? any info appreciated ! So far with the above tags the largest rectangular tag Number is #1017 and the lowest oval tag is #12014 so the oval tags began somewhere between those two ? lots of tags in between to narrow it down but its a start ! * |

12014 is my enigne, guessing about 1915-16. This is the later serial # system that uses the horsepower followed by serial #. That's the 14th 12hp under that numbering. |
