The engine above appears to be fitted with a Holley Bros. carb. |

Referring to the advertisement in Richard's first post - "Mr Watrous has just patented an automatic reverse switch for two stoke motors which make it possible to reverse an engine from any part of the boat. The feature of this little switch is that a solid propeller and shaft can be used" Here is patent # 839358 published Christmas day 1906. How the swtich works: 1 - To reverse the operator stops the engine by pulling detail 38a. 2 - This opens the electric contact between details 10 and 2a and at the same time sets a trigger at details 15 and 16 (figure 4) that hold the contacts open. 3 - According to Mr Watrous's claim when engine slows to zero speed, detail 23 strikes detail 20 releasing the trigger and reestablishing ignition as electrical continuity at 10 - 2a is again established. This occurs before TDC thus engine operates in reverse. At other times centrifugal force prevents detail 23 striking detail 20. 4 - No mention of how ignition timing is set from a remote location, however the image in Richard's post shows what may be a timing mechanism attached to the front face of the cylinder?? ******************* I suspect the Reversing Switch was intended to provide a sales advantage as most two cycle users were probably unable or uninterested to master reversing on the fly.
