I'm restoring a Pierce inverted twin, it was done a while back, but it was evidently weather beaten, pits in the flywheel and crank painted over. The flywheel was pitted and wobbled, the crank was pitted in exposed areas, the journals and keyways were worn. I decided to make a new crank rather than try to repair the old one. I machined the rim of the flywheel and bored it .020" over to get it to run true. The belt groove in the flywheel will run the low tension generator, I'm guessing that is what it was there for. I ground the crank .020" over in the flywheel area, got a nice snug fit.

Thanks Bill & Richard. The crank and flywheel are the main focal points of this engine, I wanted them to look nice. |

JB - I reckon this will be one of the feature pieces of the visit. Surely must be one of the more interesting and well done engines. miro |

Miro, I liked these engines when I first saw them in Lindseys Publications, didn't know what they were. I won't have this one running but John Smietana's is running well now, he'll have it going. |

JB - will you be able to remove the gear that is on the old crankshaft and then press it back on the new one? Bob |

Transferring it would be easy Bob, but it is in bad shape, I would like to buy or make a new one. |

Let me know if I can help with your gear. Have you looked in the Boston or Martin books? If you send it up I could get one of the local guys Carmona to make it for you. cheers Dick |

Based on the info you gave me JB the gear is 14 DP, 14.5 Press. Angle, OD is 3.143. The 14 DP is going to be hard to find. I will look and see if a standard lathe change gear might work but it probably won't have a 0.500 face width. |

As I suspected, the 14 DP tooth size is hard to find. This link http://www.msdiscount.com/columnar.aspx?cat_id=7130&category_site=STARTOOL will take you to a company that has a cutter that you could use to make one but the cutter is $135 or so. Let me check and see if Ash Gear might have a rental cutter that would work but that would still be in the $50 - $75 range. But with this info, Dick Alcock's friend could make you one, if he has the right cutter, for a more reasonable price. |

Would it be prudent to ask if Carmona Gear has a 14 DP cutter? |

Bob, thanks for the help. I have a 14dp cutter but it's in the 25 tooth range, Dick is going to check with Carmona. I found a cutter in Australia, about $50 to get it here, may have the gear cut for less. J.B. |

I have asked my friendly gear cutter to provide a quotation. If nothing else, it will serve as a baseline. |
