Here are pics of Dick Day's Smalley.

Some of you may have seen it at the Calvert Show.

I am sure that at sometime in its life the timer miter gears were replaced with a set that just didn't work as there was no way to get a grease cup on the front main bearing without drilling and tapping a new hole almost in the horizontal position.
At a guess the gears that I just installed are close to what was original.

Richard any ads of this model?

Note what I assume is the S/N on the flywheel hub.
A4273

The name on the timer handle is
Leavitt Timer MFD By
Uncas Specialty Co
Norwich CT

I am gong to guess the boss on the aft face of the cylinder was to mount linkage for a variable propeller. I can see no other reason for it to be there.

Note that it has a heated intake manifold.

Wondering what it originally had for a carb
I will put a Schlebler on it so it can be run

The finish on the cylinder and head castings is perfectly smooth and there is no filler on them that I can see

I saw this engine at Calvert several years ago and liked it, I took photos and researched it but
had difficulty in my search !
Today a lot more info is available but still no cigars are being handed out !

This is what I have found and its not etched in stone- just a compilation of notes that still require more info.

Smalley was a Company in the 1800's late 1800's they made steam engines around 1900 the name of the company was changed to

1. Smalley Brothers Co. 1901-02
By 1903 this company went into receivership and was reorganized, the new Company

2.Smalley Motor Company LTD 1903-07
This Company again in recievership in 1907.

3.General Machine Company 1907-1911

4.Smalley General Company by 1912

5.Garber Machine Co. had rights to use the Smalley engine Patents in the earl 1920's.

James H.Pierce designed this engine originally and assigned the patent # US 891366 A to the General Machinery Co, in 1908. Pierce was later to form Pierce-Budd-Nye the well known racing engines and the developers of the mixing of oil and gasoline in two cycle engines !

Up to 1906 there are a few photo ads but immediately when General Machine Co. took charge there were ads but I can't find any with Photos ?

Here is a 1904 Smalley ad. Note the make and break/pump mechanisms. The boss for make and break is present on Dick's engine and it looks like the top of the pump shaft has been modified (cut off). Could it be that this engine was modified from make and break to jump spark and the timer/gears were added at that time? No matter, I wouldn't mind if Dick's Smalley migrated into my engine room.

Dick's engine has not been modified. The boss is only on the outside of the cylinder. The water jacket is completely open and there is no corresponding hole in the cylinder. I suspect they chose to not update the external part of the pattern when they offered jump spark.

If you look at the patent drawing above I believe I found the correct carb for it.

Here is a pic showing the water jacket completly open which confirms that this engine was never make and break. It is obviously fresh water too.
Also the piston comes almost to TDC so there is no way it could have had an ignitor and no hole for it in the bore.

Ernie:

What is the connection between the open water and jacket and not having used a make and break ignition? Great thread btw. Thanks for sharing.

Look in the posts above.
There was some thought that this engine was originally make and break and had been converted to jujmp spark. The boss on the aft face of the cylinder is way too big for an ignitor and as can be seen in the pic above this engine was never make and break due to the fact that the boss on the cylinder is just that and not an ignitor hole with a cover on it. If it had been for an ignitor this would have been visable in the water jacket and there would have been an opening in the cylinder.

You should have seen it before Youtube took the shake out.

I didn't start the first turn but it did start very easily. 3rd or 4th and just kept running. I did shut it off and restart it a couple of times. I just wanted to run it. I will run it more when it is warmer and I have the outside water turned on. I am not into filling a bucket in the bathtub and hauling that down stairs. It will be at Calvert in May. In fact it is going home to Dick's place on the 22nd.
