I am restoring a 10hp Vim engine and need to have a piston and rod made. Any one know where or who can provide this service. 4" bore photo's attached.

I have some 4" Lockwood Ash pistons blanks we cast in aluminum, you would have to use two,you could have the bronze rod cast. |

I still need source to have a couple pistons made. Egge in California would not make the piston. Does anyone have a source that will make the pistons. I had the connecting rod cast but not machined yet. |

Do you have a photo of the underside/inside of the piston. It could be machined from cast iron stock by a competent machinist. Our group has the benefit of a kindly patternmaker who knocks out patterns, then a kindly foundry and volunteer machinists. We would buy in or machine rings and alter the ends for the pegs. I doubt an old engine like this has cam ground exterior. It looks turned and would be cylindrical, perhaps with some relief above the top ring. Have you thought about skimming the piston and sleeving the bore? Port work would be difficult. |

I can produce a photo of the inside tomorrow. I have a source for original rings. The new pistons can be made from aluminum. |

We once put NOS aluminium pistons retrofitted into a WW2 J2 Kelvin (4.25" bore). Thought these new original pistons would be great. Unfortunately, they expanded too much during a run and locked up in their salt water cooled barrels. To get them to run, we had to warm up for 20 minutes and get the barrels hot. We skimmed the pistons and made them loose when cold, but they still locked up when hot. Suspect early Duralumin and not the more modern high Silicon low expansion Aluminium alloys. We had to go back to NOS cast iron pistons. |

Thanks for the advice on the aluminum. So I quess I should go back to cast iron. Will keep looking for someone to do the work. Sure wish you were closer to the USA. |

We run aluminum pistons in our Lockwood Ash motors with no problems. I've made two 30 mile runs in my boat with an 8hp L-A, I made the patterns and had the pistons cast. A friend machined the first set and installed them in a boat, ran about a mile and it seized, cooled and ran a little seizing again. We took it down and found he had machined the pistons the same diameter all the way to the top, the top land was expanding from the heat and binding. Stock pistons are .010" smaller on the first land than the skirt, we increased the aluminum pistons to .020" and had no more problems. It's not uncommon to see the top land of an overheated automotive engine scored. |
