When is it necessary to "need" a transmission behind an old marine engine? Or is it just a luxury since you can reverse the direction of a 2 cycle motor? |

My Fay Bowen engine 2 cycle was designed for use with a reversible prop and will not run in reverse. Some Mercury outboard motors in the 60's didn't have FNR transmissions and were called dock -busters. FNR transmissions prevent Chinese fire drill landings.. |

We run our bateau's without transmissions, the safest thing to do is to "brake it down" a ways from the dock. If you miss reverse it takes off wide open in forward. Forward motion of the boat tends to keep the motor running forward making it harder to get it to reverse, the faster the worse. Slowing down ahead give extra time in case you miss, once creeping forward and reverse is usually easy, if you do miss it won't be catastrophic. I had one incident with a near dead battery in my boat and for some reason the engine wouldn't reverse, had to repair the headblock of the boat. |

I watched some longer inboard boats with prop and rudder maneuver in tight quarters this past weekend at the Buffalo ACBS show. It would take up to 15 forward and reverse moves to make a 90 degree turn. Reverse Gear is the safe way to go. |

I put another 2 hours on Lake Geneva with the Tuttle this morning and it sure is nice to use the variable pitch prop when coming into a dock or launch area. Just ask John Smetana about guys with no transmission or neutral bet he would give you a ear full! cheers Dick |

How hard are these viriable pitch props to find? Searcher has sent me photos and they look complex and "rare" looking. Still would like to know what size engine I would need for my 16' peopod. |

lol; Re; Bruce; Some Mercury outboard motors in the 60's didn't have FNR transmissions and were called dock -busters. FNR transmissions prevent Chinese fire drill landings.. Maybe if you go for the reverse-less option - name the boat "DockBuster" lol ...altho ive managed with just maggy's-reverse and a clutch - but then i'm the engineer- hobbyist type that likes to reverse on the spark |

Thanks everyone for their response. I need to attend some shows to see if I can even find one of the options you've mentioned. Still looking for a small engine for my 16' peapod if anyone has one out there. Thanks, David |
