Mr. Durgee has identified this engine as a Fulton, made in Erie, PA sometime around 1910-1911. He thinks that spark plug and igniter-fired engines were made at the same time, the buyer having the option. The flat surface on the cylinder is where a magneto would fit (see advertisement provided by Mr. Durgee) for either kind of ignition. Does anyone have additional information about the magneto? It is hard to make out much detail in the advert. Thanks, Dick

Richard, It could be a wico, but as far as I know, the wico EK wasn't introduced until the 1922 or 1923 time period. |

Richard - do you have any info indicating that Fulton made any diesel engines in the 1910 - 1914 time frame? Thanks Bob |

* This 1915 ad suggests that they were only making stationary Diesels At This time July 1915 ? Ad mentions Sutter Marine--Sutter Brothers Bought Fulton in 1922. * |

I read it that they were making "marine and stationary" diesel engines, i.e both. |

Regarding the magneto, squinting at the advertisement images, looking at Scott N's big Caille video, and a few notes on this OME site, I believe the mag to be a WICO Model 01. I can't tell if there is a difference between the mags on the jump spark and the igniter engines. In some of the images, there is a knife switch on the side of the mag. Perhaps Scott can tell us what is on his Caille after he recovers from the yet again terrific Mystic show. |

The Wico EK has 2 bolt holes that are verticle. Not sure on the 01. Maybe a missing bracket that was between the engine and the mag??? |

Thanks Richard - the Coates folks have the engine from the Pointer and are trying to restore it. I helped them revearse engineer the helical gear for the crankshaft that drives the cam shaft and governor for the three cylinder diesel that was used in the Pointer. We believe that that engine was originally used by G.E. in Erie to build the first version of the diesel-electric locomotive drive in the 1911-1913 time frame. The Fulton engine was deemed inadequate and given back to Fulton who sold it to the boat builder that made the Pointer. |

The article about the Pointer says it has been running for "over a year" which jibes with the dates we think apply to the Fulton engine G.E. used in their development work. Cheers |

Does anyone know the location of the "Heaps Engineering Co." mentioned above? There was such a firm in New Westminster BC. They built the Schaake engine at one time. |
