I have been scavenging my local environs for a small inboard and my eagle eye spotted a pile of small engines froze in a ditch the other day. Found the owner and got permission to dig thru it (at least to the ice layer) no marine engines but I did drag home a few ironhorses and a couple lausons. After playing with an ironhorse I got to wondering if a thrust bearing could be placed on the crank outside of the engine? I attached a photo of the location that I thought was a candidate. Basically replace the starter gear with a thrust bearing? Am I out to lunch on this idea? It seems the engine would sling oil on an angle and I was pondering either using the angle independent suction carb or making an angled spacer for the higher HP float carb? These engines run at either 1725RPM (5/8th hp mdl) or 2400 RPM (1.3 hp mdls) useable revs? If It was possible to install a thrust bearing on one of these my vision was for a one person slow, tiny, impractical little boat for the most sheltered waters. Read cute. Any thoughts or criticisms gladly accepted. |

I see no reason why not. It is also very acceptable to put a trust bearing on the prop shaft at some distance from the engine. That is how all the smaller inboard raceboats run (hydroplanes, Jersey speed skiffs). |

Good little engines those Iron Horses, well worth saving. If you're happy with this kind of engine though, why don't you take my US Motors Briggs & Stratton Model and rebuild that? Already has the marine base, but you'd need to buy the reverse gear that bolts on or use a separate gear. Looks like you can get rebuild kits for them on eBay too. Some photos of it here: http://www.oldmarineengine.com/discus/messages/3454/140489.html |

Robert, Yes by all means I would much prefer to start with a marine engine then to retrofit an ironhorse. I'd be happy to buy your briggs and restore it and save my ironhorses for a light plant and gold sluice pump. I am going to try and save a few more iron horses I grabbed them not knowing anything about them just based on the build quality. Hope I can get a few more, but the fellow they came from is 'fickle'. Back to the briggs marine: I might be travelling down the 97 toward Vancouver in June to bring the wife to an appointment at UBC and could grab it then maybe, or the bus is an option if you are too far off that route. I am up in the north peace. My email is ddoyle AT omnitechenvironmental. ca Ned: Thanks for the nod toward it being ok to have the thrust bearing down the driveline from the engine. I appreciate the knowledge. |

I emailed you David. We can certainly make a deal for the Briggs. In the meantime you might want to keep looking and you might well find something even better up there! (or enough stuff to start a collection and a new hobby! ) You are well away from the big scrap yards, so stuff tends to linger in areas like yours and if you keep asking around you may find exactly what you want. Talk to the older folks and show them photos of what you mean. Many times people's memories will "click" if you show them a photo or two; we see things, but don't necessarily recognize them for what they are. This worked for me I know. You could even put an ad or two at local boat or marine places with some photos printed off the net. Talk to the junk haulers in your area if there are any, etc. |

Robert, I did not recieve an email, can you try again? ddoyle AT omnitechenvironmental.ca great idea on the picture showing. Never thought of that. The trouble with finding something local is that this is decidedly not marine country and we did not have many folks up here until well after the Alaska highway was built during wwII, even then not much of the water was inboard friendly in those days. On the plus side we are so far from salt water that any inboard that did live here would have a good chance of being restorable. This winter I found a 1956 outboard that have never been run! Got it cheap as it had 50 years of hayseed and grime all over and the gear box was mildly stuck. Trouble is I am loathe to run it LOL. Hopefully you can try emailing again, after sleeping on it I am extra excited to make that briggs look like new. |
