Hello Any way to date a 5 h.p. vivian by serial # my # is 1702.Where should the oil level &at what point should it fire. Any chance of finding a manual. thanks Larry |

The date cannot be determined exactly since the Vivian sales records are apparently lost, despite the fact that they existed until the mid-70s at least. The dates we have are based on numbers seen and those referenced in letters, or engines dated by Canadian Car & Foundry who took over Vivian at the end. The estimated date will depend on whether the tag says "Vivian Gas Engine Works" or just "Vivian Engine Works". IRRC, around 1933 the name changed when Vivian began to make diesels and the engine numbers were restarted. It's been a long time since I looked at all this, but that is my recollection.
How wide is the rim of the flywheel?
No user manual for any gas Vivian engine is known to exist, at least not to me.
Take off the crankcase covers and examine the oil level and the position of the dipper on the bottom of the conrod. It should be fully immersed. If I'm wrong about that one of our more experienced members will correct me I hope!
You should have a drip feed oiler on the camshaft gear cover which oils those gears.
