I've recently aquired a 4-6 Easthope engine. It's been sitting for years in a shed without any coolant in it, subsequently it got the dry heaves. The head looks okay but the cylinder is toast. Anyone know if a cylinder, new or used or unmachined, is available, or am I dreaming.
Thanks, Allan

I am not sure but Joe Holmes in British Columbia
i believe has a pattern for the head and cylinder and both Robert Hanna and Joe Holmes have a wealth of imformation on these easthope and Vivian engines.

Hi Jim, the crack is serious, front and back. My pictures of it are to large to post here. I'll try and compress them or take some more soon. Have your repairs been done by yourself? Were they cast iron welded or brazed
Thanks, Al

Al,all the repair work machining and welding on my own, If you have all of the pieces the job is not to difficult, the first thing that you have to do is burn out the salt, and that can be done in a good fire in the back yard for about 8 hours. next is to clean out all of the crap that is inside, cut a section out if you have to to do a better job. welding is done with either, tig, cast rod or my last choice brass. I have also used a solder, but first you have to tin the cast with copper, that is a bit tricky.Just remember to do a supper job on the clean up, or it won`t last.

When you use fire to burn out the salt is the part in the fire or in a oven of some type? Do you have force air interduced to the fire?

Just use a nice fire to cover the engine, not something that will pull the carbon. After a good burn let it cool slowly out of a draft, I put my stuff in a box of zoneolite for a coulpe days. If it smells like salt , do it again.

Look on Craigslist for a free self-cleaning oven. Go to your favorite scrap yard and get some heavy duty cable. Makeup an extension cord and with the oven set up outside on very windy day, put the head and cylinder in and set it on "clean". That will do the job. After you've burned out everything that will burn, you can blast the rest clean and clean out the water jacket and weld or braze it back together.
