This was sent to me by Rod Clark:
Quote:Hi I am a collector of old engines and live in Blenheim New Zealand ,I have been given an old Penguin boat motor it is a three and a quarter horse power single cylinder two stroke . Engine number is M6429 and Series2S ,it is made in Australia . I am trying to find out how old it is and some history on these engines , below is a Photo of it as given to me .And restored , I had to make a new water jacket as the old one was badly cracked and unable to be welded also fitted new rings ,have not had it running yet but it did fire when I pulled it over . I belive Peter Ogbourne who is a member of your club may know something about them ,will close now and hope you may be able to help . Cheers Rod Clark

Rod .....you appear to have done a beautiful restoration . Unfortunately I do not have a Penguin . There are others on this list that do and i am sure they will respond . Tim Mulvey is one who may be the second to answer you . Tim just sent me some info on a Stuart Turner R3 that I am restoring. Penguin were smart in the design of the water jacket ....what did you use ? |

Hi Peter good to hear your comments about the Penguin ,this is the first restoration of this kind that I have done so it is good to know what others think . The water jacket as I said was beyond repair and I was told there was nothing that could be done to fix it ,however I was thinking about it and thought why not make one so I found some steam pipe the right diameter and had the local enginering firm weld an end in to it they then just had to drill a hole to go over the spark plug housing and make the mounting for the water pump |

A fine example of an Aussie classic. The info on the Pengiun that you have Tim would be very interesting. I have one the same as Rod,s and have just finished restoring it. It has just gone into a 14'6" clinker made in Tasmania back in 1915. (been in the family for 4 generations)I have just caught up with a guy who has another the same and one that is a little younger. I will post some photos as soon as I take some. |

Thanks Tim .....I can only recall the original ''Chips''. Today as a result of a swap for a lawn mower I obtained a ''Sea Dog '' Twin ,the one with the magneto and seperate distributor. |

I may have been the chap who used the name chips Rafferty, cobber.....I have a much older Penguin unnumbered with an oval plate on the waterjacket and a vaporiser in lieu of the carby. Mine is for sale at a sensible offer. I go by a whole string of assorted noms d plume and only Len Tate knows my true identity that I cannot divulge for reasons of national security. I do have a manual for the post WW2 Penguin which I can send as a series of files(I think) |

The info you have on the engine would be much appreciated. I have no idea what year this motor was manafactured and only assume that it may have been around this period. Any written stuff on Pengiuns seems to be very difficult to come accross. If you wish to liase directly over the old motor you have or any other stuff, just give a shout by email. (My name and posted email address is real). Dave Price Tas |

Hmmm, I'm still yet to asemble my penguin, despite stripping her down & doing most of the painting. Building too many boats, I think!! Selling off some of my gear on Ebay, too..... Andrew, your engine looks sweet. Mine's much newer (I think) with the tapered-out water jacket. I also have a manual kicking around somewhere..... |

Hi I am also looking for date of manufacture on a Penguin Series 2S # 7731. Looks the same as the photo of the one Dave Price has . Also no H.P. size stamped on the I.D. plate, about 4 H.P. i suppose. Any info would be welcome. Phil. |
