I was given a 16 ft fiberglass boat with a damaged transom. I'm not sure how to repair it well enough to trust it to carry an outboard of any size so I'm contemplating converting it to an inboard using a 4 cyl S-10 type engine. If I was do do this what would I use for a transmission? How would I determine what size prop to use? Anyone done something like this? Any advice would be welcome. You know. Like don't do it! |

Most modern fiberglass boats are designed for high speed with a planing hull. Old marine engines typically are used for mush slower displacement type hulls. Have a look at some of the hull shapes in the Boats section of the Discussion Board - you'll see what I mean. If you do proceed with the project, I think you might be disappointed with the results. You'd be better off restoring an old displacement hull and old marine engine combination. Miro |

Yeah. I posted this in the wrong place. If anywhere on this site, it should have been in the multi-cylinder section. It is a planing hull. I was thinking of a 4 cylinder engine out of a junker Chevy S-10 or Ford Ranger or maybe even a V6 from a Dodge Dakota. A little more research suggests it would involve more cost than I'm prepared to deal with. Seems like an interesting project to me though |
