I've had this engine for a couple of years and want to get it running for one of my winter projects. It's 18 1/2" high , 13 3/4" F.W. with a 3 1/2" B&S. It's in very good mechanical condition just missing some piping and gas tank. I want to take off the outside parts clean and make sure the carb and water pump is working. I think that I know about most items but I have some questions. Looking at the flywheel , 1. There is a pipe in front going to the left with an elbow turned down. It doesn't seem to go to anything. What does it do? 2. There s a bolt on the right side up close to the head. Used for? 3. The crankcase cover on the left side has an elbow with a plug. Used for? 4. The water pump has a check valve on the right side(outlet) then piped to the cylinder. The left side (inlet) has no check valve and not piped. I would think that it needs a check valve. Looking at the back 5. The plug at the center near the head I belive is the water outlet from the cylinder. 6. The plug on the right side goes into the cylinder and I think is for an oiler. I would like to find out about these items and get some pictures if possible. Thanks , |

* Dick That is an outstanding engine and restoration work that raises the bar higher than a high jump bar at a track meet !! The Headless Tuttle with the pressure oiling system is bit different engine than Rons in above photos. These photos may help with some of his questions ? the elbow fitting in the crankcase inspection plate was for a drip oiler for the connecting rod,Take some photos of the waterpump, Tuttle had subtle differences over the years. the cylinder primer cups in photos are turned sideways obviously should be upright, cool old engine about 105 yrs old !! 1.Tuttle Starboard (right)side 2. Tuttle Port (left) side * |

Dick and Richard your input and photos are very helpful. Yes there is another check valve on intake. What I thought was for an oiler is for a primer cup. The elbow on the crank cover plate is for a rod oiler. The only other thing is the turned down elbow on the front. I'm now thinking that it is for an oiler for the cylinder?? If it is does that mean that this engine was ment to run on straight gas(no oil added)since everything is lubed? Do you happen to have an extra check valve that you would sell? Thanks much , Ron |
