Does anybody have one? The engine is called "The Britannia Middy Inboard Engine". It is a 4 horse power, "Mariner" Inboard Motor. We think it was built in approx 1930. It is an English boat, and English engine, and the company that built them may have been called Britannia, perhaps the Britannia Motor Company, or Britannia Motor Boats. Other Motor Specifications that might be of use: Medium speed, twin cylinder, 50.5 mm. bore, 41 mm. stroke; 105 cc. piston
displacement, develops 4 h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m. |

Here is an pic of the Brittania Middy inboard taken from an advert from the 31 March 1933 issue of the Yachting World and Motor Boat Journal (a British publication).
The Brit Mariner is a different animal - it's a similar engine but the prop goes back thur the keel.

I saw your add on the MIddy sept 03 and I've got one. Do you know what sort of hull they were made for?. haven't been able to find out much on this engine or type of boat, believe they were used in some sort of military craft. |

I have a Brittania out board ,twin ,horizontaly opposed. Not being really interested in out boards i have not had a good look at it . I wonder if it is the same manufacturer as Brit Engineering ,Dorset ?I dont know if this firm still exists.They did make an inboard engine.....until i get my lent ''bible'' back i can't give any details. |

Does anybody have a manual for a Britannia Middy engine. My Great Uncle die back in 1990 and he had one of these outboards. It has now been given to me. I would like to get it working again. Any help would be really appreciated. And yes I think it has been sat in a barn in a croft for the last 26 years, but it does turn over.

Hello Dfor37,
I've got a couple of the britannia middy engines, inboard versions.
Have the same power head i.e. horizontal twin.
There really isn't much to them, they have lovely large gun metal bearings and con rods. Main problem will be the coil, if you can get a spark it will run. |
