I have been running a 1909 6hp Strauble in a 23ft surf boat and we have been getting used to each other.

After about 20 outings, I have come to the conclusion that the prop is too big. I think it is a 18" x 18" three blade but don't know for sure.

When I use the boat with one other person, the engine will "2 cycle" and run great. With a load of 8 people it is tempermental when I try to lean it to a 2 cycle run.

I am running gas with 32:1 straight 30 non-detergent oil. I have found that too much oil can be a problem too.

Would I be better off trying to use the oiler and running straight gas for more power or does this sound like a propeller problem?

This message board has been a help, hope someone has some ideas.

Russ,
You almost got it... but instead of using the regular brackets "( )", you have to use the squiggly ones "{ }". Try again.

Russ, that prop sounds big for a six hp if it's direct drive, how many rpms are you turning, what's it rated at. An 18" prop with no pitch would take a lot of hp. If your engine is in the 1000 rpm range I would try something around 15x15 or 16x16. It can turn a little over the rated rpm by yourself, you can hold it down a little, this way you can carry a load.

I have known of a sensitive carby that would actually change it's mixture with the trim of the boat! It was a Schebler and the spring plunger in the throat was too loose!?
Another observation with two strokes is the unpredictable running if air is leaking through the main bearings;,,it doesn;t know if it's rich or lean?!
What is the bore x stroke?
Gregoryan.
