A buddy of mine has an old Carlyle Johnson Bud-E Marine motor that he believes was manufactured in the late 1920's or early 30's. It is a two cylinder inboard/outboard motor with the transmission and reverse setting. The serial number is 2848. The motor runs and is in good shape. Granted this is sight unseen, but does anyone have a ball park estimate of its worth? I have already contacted the manufacturer to no avail. Thanks in advance. |

Is this what it looks like? As to value there are too many variables to even begin to comment. The first and most inportant, has it ever been used in salt water. If it has it's value is questionable at best untill a very good examination has been done. This will include examining the water jackets by removing fittings and looking inside. Hope this helps Ernie

I have the original prototype of 1911 that had babbit bearings. The old ones had the transmission attached to the two cylinder motor block, crank start, rotary water pump on front, solid flywheel etc. The Co. is still in business as gear manufacturer in Conn. They have old literature and will send copies. Look up on internet under Carlyle-Johnson. No relation to Johnson outboards. Mine is in the vintage launch of about 1911 that it came in! |
