A lot of the engine bits I've acquired are pitted with rust. When the rust is removed, what filler can I use to get a smooth finish -cosmetic only, not internal working surfaces? Is automotive body filler OK? In difficult places I use Phosphoric acid to neutralise the rust. Will the filler take on these surfaces? Any Proprietory brands would have to be available in OZ. |

Len, I would reccoment any of the polyester resin fillers.. Plati Bond is the pick it sets hard can be drilled, tapped, painted etc and will stick like human excrement to the proverbial blanket. As long as the Phosphoric acid has been nutralised it would bond superbly. You couldnt put any filler over rust as it would just corrode under the filler. Mr ACT Fiberglass can supply resin and metal fillers if you want to make up your own. I have tried epoxy fillers and they dont seem to have the adhesion that polyester has in the long term. Trust me ... I used to do a lot of this type of thing and I worked for the government.... Alternatlivly, a long since departed relative of mine who built a few early steam locomotives just before one of them ran over him at Rainhill used iron filings and urine as a filler with complete success to hold wheels etc on. Female urine worked better than male... Ms Hepburn may offer you a sample in the interests of science... |
