It's about time to decoke the Simplex.In the past I,ve used caustic soda on air cooled 2 strokes(cast iron) which works a treat or diesel fuel which works well but slower.Any idea if this will affect a salt water cooled cylinder regards Kevin |

Kevin, Caustic Soda should not affect the cylinder. As long as you maintain the PH at around 11 it will passivate the iron(stop the corrosion process). Don't let it fall below 9 or above 13 or you will greatly accelerate any existing corrosion. From memory a 2.5% solution should give you this range. I don't have any experience with decoking with soda ash though(I usually scrape etc). IMHO I don't like caustic soda, one splash in the eye and you've got problems. I usually use soda ash(laundry soda). For a PH of 11 you need a 5% solution. Mark S. |
