I have a Regal 1 cylinder, 2hp engine in excellent running condition. It has external water and oil pumps. The oil system has a sight glass which resembles a drip oiler. The oil enters it from the top of a standing pipe in the center of the glass. it goes out through the bottom into the line leading to the main bearings. I assume the purpose of a sight glass is to simply show that the oil is circulating. But what should I see? When the engine has not been run for "some" time", the glass will be empty and after starting the oil will fill the glass about half way and stay at that level while the engine runs. I think that when I first put this engine together, It would fill completely and some agitation of the oil could be seen while it ran. But I'm not sure I remember it correctly. Is my oil circulating? What should a sight glass show? |

Is that black appendage I see to the extreme right a Hydrex Silencer? |

I know nothing about Evinrude so if you can post the specific make and model of the carburetor you are looking for I would rummage around to see what I have. |

Probably just about any updraft carb with a 1"to2" throat would work. What do you have? |

If it empties out, it should be emptying at the mains. If it empties out quickly, the mains have some clearance. If it does not empty, something is clogged. Why not take the feed line from the pump off, turn the motor over quickly without the spark plug, and see if oil comes out. If it does, it seems to me that the pump is ok. If the pump is ok and the oil drains out, seems to me its working. |

Your oil system is doing and showing exactly what it should. If it ain't broke don't fix it! Or mess with it |

Searcher: The black appendage is the muffler which also has cooling water from the cylinder running out with the exhaust. I don't know what it is called. I was concerned about the oil because it doesn't drain quickly when the engine is shut off. It will hold oil in the sight glass for a day or more which means it is seeping out slowly. I guess the only way to tell for sure is to take it apart and check each oil line. Or wait until I hear a squeaking piston or knocking rod. |
