Back in 2002, I bought a little 2 HP Westman, and I asked around for help in figuring out the ignition and other things. I even took the motor to the Mystic show for some advice. I really like this motor because it fits in so well with my Minnesota engine collection. http://www.oldmarineengine.com/discus/messages/1/369.html http://www.oldmarineengine.com/discus/messages/1/1242.html Here are some pictures of it to keep the information in one thread.

I never really figured out the ignition, so I tracked down another Westman, this time stuck in a barn under a bunch of junk. When I first saw it, I assumed it was a stationary, because of the twin flywheels. But, after getting it out, I now think it is a marine, that has a latter added second flywheel. I planned on making a new ignition like the one on this 5 HP, it would work, but wasn't very elegant.

However, a beautiful high class little motor like this deserves a nickel plated ignition, to match all the other nickle plating. And, it should reach up high where a boatsman could adjust it. So, as luck would have it, a very nice wood boat restorer gave me a call, and I found the jackpot at the end of the rainbow.

I got lucky, and the very nice wood boat restorer needed some help getting a few other motors running, and had no real attachment to this other Westmen, so we made a trade. We were both very happy. I won't tell you what I traded, because if my luck really holds, I will be able to get it back someday. So, here is my new, but somewhat older, Westman 2 hp.

Richard, Thanks, after 7 years I thought my quest for Westman ignitions was finally over, and I would be happy for ever after, but now I can never truly be happy until I find one of those. |
