I have a 4 HP Lathrop that has been abused/ run hard over the years. I have gone through it only to find very little / poor compression. I have purchased new rings, however there is too much clearence (almost .008") between the rings and the land. There is a small amount of space between piston and cyl. wall that does not seem to be out of the ordinary when compred to my other engines. No ridge exists and the bore looks great. I get a great seal on the base with a strong/sharp new charge into the cyl., however there is hardly any compression to fire the charge. Is this sleeve time or new piston? Special rings? What now? |

if the bore is good, then look into building up the piston, either flame welding it, or sleeving it, and then machine in new ring lands. I know people who have done both with satisfactory results. |

Is that preferable to sleeving and boring the cylinder? |

Basically purchase rings that are too wide and cut the ring grooves to match the new rings with .002 to .003 thou side clearance We can discuss it on Sat at Mystic Ernie |
