I've tried to upload several pictures of my ca 1909 Watkins Motor Co 3 HP motor without success so far. Let me try just one picture this time. History of this engine: My Mom bought this at an auction for $7.50 I believe in 1950 or 1951 in Bridgton, Maine (I was with her). She thought my brother might be able to use it in a bateau he was building. He couldn't. We didn't know how to make it run. In 1961 I tore it down and put put it back together as part of an engineering shop project and with the help of my instructor and former fishing boat engineer who may have even had one of these as a boy. He provided the buzz coil and showed me how to make it run both forward and reverse by flipping the spark advance. After bench running it a number of times, I put it away thinking someday I'll drop it into an appropriate boat. That day has yet to arrive. Now I'm thinking I need to find it a new home soon as I really ought to be considering downsizing. Since this uploaded, I'll try to provide more photos |

Thanks to Richard Durgee's post of the various models of Watkins motors, I now have an idea when mine was made. Possibly, since mine is No 150 and the 1909 design and someone else has No 172 and is of the 1911 design unless they started renumbering their engines with each design change, I am guessing mine may have been built in 1910 or so. Now I would like to know more about the Watkins Motor Co. I see that company may have begun around 1890. Does anyone know when they went out of business or did it continue or evolve into some other company? Thanks |
