This was a really exciting find! This little engine is named the Canadian Beaver made by the Sherman Cooper Co Limited Toronto. It has a 14" flywheel with 3 holes of 3/4" in it. It has 5 head bolts - not studs, it's a 4" bore and a 4" stroke with 3 rings on the piston. The spark plug is on the side of the head - which seems odd. The thrust bearing seems to be inside the timing gear and the main bearings are in flanges the use 6 1" bolts to the crank case. It has a Monarch carb, with a 1" exhaust and a 1 1/4" outlet. It uses Detroit Lubricator Grease Cups and a Loberdorfer NY water pump. The brass tag shows a serial # of 971, there are 2 sets of tag mount holes on the engine - one on the head and the other on the cylinder, does anyone know if this is to put the tag in either spot or am I missing a second tag? I have been unable to uncover an information on either this engine or this company, does any one have any info they can share. I am also wondering if it is possible that this engine was US made and re-tagged for the Canadian market?

Phil, Neat find! If the carb isn't one of the Monarchs with a built in check valve you will need a check valve in between the carb and the crankcase. It's not an engine that remember seeing anywhere till now. Have fun with it Ernie |

There it is. Good for you Phil. Any info on when this company was in business? Any photo ads of these marine engines? Is the spark plug a few degrees off perpendicular to the crankshaft? It doesn't look square with the carb. Nice find. Blair |

Hi Guys, the Monarch carb does not seem to have a check valve. The spark plug is very unusual - you rotate the head in any one of 5 different directions! For info on the company - so far no photo ads but I do have a 7 page document that is a "Summary of the State of Affairs on the 31st Day of December, 1908" issued by Sherman Cooper Co. Ltd Letters Patent November 16, 1906, Incorporated October 24, 1906. The document lists all the priniples and shareholder of the company, authorized capital of $40 000 divided into 800 shares of $50 each. This is a very faded and fragile document and I have yet to figure out how to get it posted - I will however have it with me at the annual Barrie Auto Fleamarket June 4 -7th if anyone would like to take a look. * I don't have much info on Canadian Beaver only some notes taken some time back, looking through these notes It seems that Canadian Beaver was the mfgr around 1911-13 and I have a 1912 ad for them listed but its before computer days and I can't find it right now. Sherman - Cooper Co.was referred to as the Sales agency in 1913, but like in other cases the sales Co. bought the mfgr ?? Would be interested to see what type of Company Sherman-Cooper actually was ?? ** |

Phil/Richard, Have you come up with anything further on the connection between Canadian Beaver Co. and Sherman Cooper Co.? This 1910 Gilson ad was included in the ones that Denis Rouleau has found in Rod & Gun recently. Looks like the same engine to me. . . Any idea who was manufacturing and who was retagging? |

The Canadian Rod and Gun ads have added a few better photos of engs but no articles that help with the history of the Co's. Last I looked Denis had posted Minnesota Boat & Power, any more since then ? Good research- lots of work ! ** |
