* These little motors were only advertised in 1904-05, I have wondered about the design and ignition on these for some time ? Must have been designed 1902-03 ? look how high on the cylinder the generator valve is ? (three port) ?? blowing up these old vague ad photos the eng also seems to have a crankshaft driven gear and shaft to the small box on the side ??? have only seen this on 1890's and early 1900 motors this Graves is the latest Ive seen-- would still like to know whats in the box ? a timer or a mini magneto ?? anyone with a very early catalog of any Mfgr that shows this ignition ?? * |

Richard, I'm probably way off base as I just don't have a whole lot of experience sorting these things out yet. The geared shaft looks like it might operate a valve lifter and then the shaft continues on to what resembles a Wico 'pancake' magneto mounted on the back of the engine. I can email you a much better scan of the ad if you wish but the ad was fuzzy to begin with. |

When I first looked at the ad, I was thinking 4 cycle. Looked to me like a gear-driven cam shaft on the side with an over/under valve chest at the top of the cylinder. No sign of a carb though... |

* I have several ads but they are all the same side of the motor and very poor quality. What looked like a generator valve could very well be a valve chamber for a 4 cycle and the box on side a support bracket for cam shaft and mag in back makes sense ! Thanks * |
