* post photos of your engine if possible- few of these old engines are recognized by their serial numbers.

Does your engine look like this one ??

Easthope engines can be recognized by their S/N in most cases, at least how they were at time of sale. Ray's engine is a 6-8 hp "Standard". Standard means it has an enclosed reverse gear and dual ignition. The ignitions are Wico EK mag and Autolite timer. The other 6-8 hp is called a "Special". The Special has an open (uncovered) reverse gear and single ignition, the Wico EK. Easthope made their own reverse gears which came in three sizes. Rays is a number two clutch and because it is enclosed, (covered over by a cast cover bolted to the engine bed and gasket sealed) it is lubricated by the engine oil. In most cases with enclosed clutches there is a dip stick between the engine base and the clutch. Fill to the mark. Idealy these engines require oil to just cover the small dipper scoops on the bottom of the con rod. Any more oil and it will be thrown out. The 6-8 hp Easthopes have a Manzel oiler and the thinking was that the rate of flow of oil into the engine was set to equal the amount of oil leaking out and they all leak. (Babbit main bearings and no seals) The operators job was to oil everything else that moved. There are small oil reservoirs with cotton waste which was kept moist. Ray, you can use any good grade of non detergent oil. 30 weight is good.
Richard, your engine is a 4-6. I would be interested in having your S/N as your engine pics do not compute with the usual 4-6 Easthope. For example there is only one 4-6 with dual ignition and it has the Cuno and Wico like yours but is in a cannery museum on the Skeena River near Prince Rupert BC S/N E2139 built 1932. I'm not sure why your engine has dual ignitions and only one spark plug. However their always exist some marvelous refinements(?) made in the field. I feel confident to say that the 4-6 hp Easthope was never sold with dual ignition. The only way to check oil level on the 4-6 hp is to remove one of the side plates and look for that 1/2" up the dipper on the bottom of the con rod. Oil drips in and oil leaks out. What a marvelous concept...continuous oil change eh? To answer Ray's questions, Easthope used the Cloverdale Paint Co. green porch enamel colour. To stop your timer from spinning it should have an arm clamped to the outer shaft and restricted to small arc of movement, ie. a few degrees each side of top dead centre. As to books on "how to" with Easthopes, there is very little. They did provide some info on how to install and valve settings etc. I will send you a copy. Richard, can you post your S/N...I also keep a registry of Easthopes. As far as the accuracy of records it should be noted that Easthope built less than 6000 engine between 1900 and the mid 60's....Joe

Thank you Richard. Easthope E2234 was built July 13, 1933 and sold to a gent in New Westminster, BC. His name was/is Robert Hampton. The invoice number is 5900 and he paid cash, $227.70. This engine is aready in my registry as belonging to a gent in Victoria BC. May I assume it is now your engine so I can update the registry? By the way the records show it as single ignition (Wico) I'll send you some more info by the old way................Joe

Anyone know when Easthope stopped building engines? I was installing brand new ones in 1983 that looked a lot like the one Richard posted.
