We received the following by email:

Hi, I am a newly signed in member, though I have been following the site for a while. I have noticed Larry Healey has had several Midland pictures posted on the Midland site. I have attached my collection of Midlands, feel free to post it as well if you think there is an interest. You will see right in the picture I got lucky and found a carburator with Midland Engine Works embossed right on it- both sides to boot!

I look forward to seeing more things turn up on the site.

Thanks Phil and Andrew for posting the photos !

The Carburetor is very interesting, it was probably mfgrd by The Generator Valve Co. for midland. So far 1906 seems to be the only year that they were made.

This 1906 ad is for the Eclipse carburetor, I have been looking more than 25 yrs for one to complete a 1906 engine that had one as original equipment !

Welcome Phil. Thanks for sharing. I'd love to hear that big two-cylinder running. How much do you think that it weighs? Blair

Hi Richard, I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner, I was expecting this to posted on the Midland site, and I only found it here by accident well checking out the other sites. I'm really excited to see your posted ad for the carb. Mine has 1 1/4 pipe threads, I'm wondering if they made other sizes, do you know? I didn't get the Midland carb with an engine but at a flea market, supposedly he has another so I'm keeping tabs on him. I am wondering if they are made by the Midland factory or shopped out to the Generator Valve Co and how long they were in production? Sooner or later I'll get pictures of the carb set up like your ad and post them, it should be a great comparison.

Hi Blair, I haven't weighed the two cylinder, but I know it's to heavy to go in a mini van!

Phil

From what I can put together this carb was used late 1905 thru 1906 maybe 07 by Sterling on its two cycle engines The 2 1/2 & 4 1/2 Hp singles had a 1 inch pipe thread, the 5 & 7 Hp twins used a larger pipe thread ?

Most of these marine carbs were made 3/4, 1, 1 1/4 maybe 1 1/2 - so few around to know for sure ?

If the fellow at the flea market has a one inch
carb I would be very interested in it for this 2 1/2 Sterling.

Very nice restoration Richard. What type of wood have you used for the skids?

Is it just the way that we're looking at the picture, or does that spark plug point out to the front of the engine...right where you'd reach down to grab the advance/retard lever?

Don't know what the wood is I got about 5 or 6 pieces left over from the boat yard after they refubished the interior of a large yacht about 10 yrs ago !

The Mica plug does stick out at an odd angle but away from the timer.

Hi Richard, beautiful engine! I have posted a close uppicture of both sides of my Midland carb. While looking at this piece closely
I can see why they didn't last on the engines - it would appear the air in-take are very small and would restrict flow. My 2 cylinder Midland came with a Holly carb on it. I also have a Sterling kid and it came with a nickel plated Chevler carb that I have always assumed was correct? I know of a 2 cylinder Sterling with a missing carb but a ferro carb, with the single mounting bolt fits right in.Midland Carb
