This is off topic but I'm hoping that someone might have a website bookmarked that I can no longer find. 4 or 5 months ago I was searching for info on Petter engines when I found a Petter website that was located in Africa. Also while searching I came across another website in Africa where this man & his wife had this old house boat with a small diesel engine and they traveled on some long river in Africa. The boat ran from bio-diesel which he made on the boat. He would stop at restaurants and peoples houses and use their old cooking oil for fuel. Him & his wife had taken photos of their travels on this long river. Some of the photos were of old engines along side the banks of the river. It was really a interesting website. Wished I could find it again. Thought I bookmarked it. Guess not. Anyone ever come across this site? |

Johnny, I don't know this African or the web site, but you might try joining Wastewatts, it's a yahoo groups thing. Also, there is a Lister Diesel engine users group run by the same person. His name is Ken Boak and he resides in the UK. He runs his household on a 50 year old Lister Diesel engine that is fueled with waste soybean oil. SVO, straight vegetable oil. Biodiesel fuel is a little different and much messier. I suspect that the African was running SVO in his Petter engine...probably a Lister-Petter engine. Google Ken Boak and you'll hit pay dirt. John, I believe it was a Caucasian American couple that were retired. I could be wrong about the bio diesel but I do know they were using old grease from restaurants to make their fuel along the way. I do remember the engine was a small 4 cylinder diesel. |

Johnny, When I said "African" I meant country of origin, not race. I assumed they were citizens of an African country. "Grease from restaurants" translates to: rapeseed oil, soybean oil and such deep frying oils as are found in restaurants. Hardly anyone uses "grease" anymore except in home kitchens. Real grease would be like "Crisco", which of course melts, but is not in liquid form at room temperature. It is very similar to margarine. SVO works well in slow speed Diesels and may work well in higher speed Diesels for all I know. You may wish to visit / join: Lister_CSOG on Yahoo Groups. It's free. They discuss all of this there. A great site / group in general. I will be trying to run one of my 2-stroke Acadia engines on soybean oil for personal electrical power and heat generation, CHP, Combined Heat and Power.
