Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and have a small engine called an Underwood made in Melbourne Australia. I'm hoping to get some info on it so I can give it a birthday. It is a single cylinder two stroke petrol maybe 2 hp. I've had it for about 10 yrs and have run it a few times on the bench. It had a tin frost plug which rusted/blew out last time I ran it a couple of years ago. I'm building a boat for it next year and would like to overhaul it and get it as close to original as possible so would like to get any info on it I can. I tried uploading photos but the files were too big so I'll ask someone clever or I'm happy to email them out to anyone. Hope someone can help. Much appreciated, Grant. |

Hi Grant, I don't have very much info on Underwood. It's restricted to a copy of a 1947 add and a few pictures. The earliest date for the Underwood Motor Manufacturing Co seems to be 1946. They were deregistered in September 1954 and were a Melbourne based company. F.W. Green & Co (registered in July 1945)of 20 Queen St Melbourne distributed Underwood Engines . They also claimed to have branches in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. The 1946 add is titled "The New and Improved 3hp". On this engine the cylinder is square. I have seen 3 or 4 of these engines and they were all the same, with a square cylinder. That's all I really have. It maybe that Underwood were a post-war company or that they existed pre-war. A picture of your engine would be most helpful. Good luck with your boat. Cheers Mark S. |
