I just inheirited an Imperial that is from Stewart, Bruce & Co. Ltd. in PEI I suppose as I am in NB. It is in rough shape, seized, loose bearings, missing something and has big chunk of metal broke out of the exhaust casting. It has a gear-driven jump-spark? I hope to post a foto once I figure out the camera. It has a 1 1/2" Shnebler. Any info out there? I also got a 3hp Acadia that I hope to get going with all the tips you guys have on this great site! |

I think you found the right spot.I have a 4 HP jump spark impérial # 4434 engine, made by the Bruce Stewart & co in Charlettown PEI.
The cylinder is perforated and the water jacket is broken in some places, no lose bearings, piston, connecting rod and crank shaft are A1.
I also have the shaft, stuffing box, propeller, spare spark plug, new ignition coil and carburator.
This engine is also a gear driven jump spark.

Hi All, I have just acquired what I think may be a rare engine. It is a 5 HP, serial # 4107, Imperial made by Bruce Stewart & Co PEI. The only info I could find on this company was in Wendel's BYB - does anyone have more info on them? The engine is in pretty good shape with a restoration(?)/paint job done about 25 yrs ago, does anyone know what the original colours would have been? This one should be fun to play with! |

Thanks for posting, Phil.
It was an interesting design, with the pump hanging out there on the outside of the timer. There are a few around but certainly not plentiful. Any ideas on the years in production (Richard)?

Have not come across a really good source of history for Bruce Stewart, and their advertisement budget in US publications must have been minimal at best, I found one non photo ad in 1911. There are a few of the engines in collections I know of about 5 or so !
In my notes There are references to the design such as the different shapely mount bases, the 4 bolt cylinder to crankcase flange and that water/pump driven by the timer sure looks like about a 1909-10 E.W.Roberts designed engine ?? I wasn't aware that Stewart was still in business as late as 1929 like the post above says- sort of an old style engine to still be marketing in 1929 ??
This is a Roberts engine that was at Calvert any thoughts ??

Hi All, after looking at the pic on Richards posting I realized I have the identical hole in the flywheel, on the outer edges of the oblong hole there is a slight depression - I found that by holding a piece of 5/8 rod into either depression I could turn the flywheel and if the engine started the rod would not have caught in the holes. Is this a common feature on the Stewart Imperials or Roberts engines? |

Hello again, while looking through the net I came accross John Bentley who had made a model of a Model A which is the oldest as shown with the jump-spark. The exhaust casting on yours is a newer style than mine, the later ones were machined. Mine also has a oblong hole but also has a retracting starting knob. John said the color is supposed to be parkbench green. The best match is the old Parks Canada buildings that were painted white with green trim. That is the green. John said that it was a point of pride that the Imperials were shipped without gaskets between the major components as compared to the mainland competitors Acadia and Atlantics, he had it on good authority because one day Stanley Stavert who was 93 at the time came into his shop and said that it was his job when he was an appentice at Bruce Stewart's to lap the the big cast iron parts by hand on a large lapping plate. He went on to co-found the Hall & Stavert Foundry 70 some years ago which still supplies brass propellers and marine gear to the Atlantic Provinces and New England.
The earliest ad for Imperials I've seen was for 1905 but I've also seen some large steam engines they made probably before that. Apparently they were active on the Charlottetown waterfront until the 1960's. |

Hi Guys, thanks for the responses. John Bentley sounds like he would be an interesting guy to talk too, is there a way to contact him? I am also wondering if you have copies of the ads you mentioned, I try to put together a literature file for my engines and they would make a great addition. |

I have one ad that has no picture but it is too big to post at this site. I had found more looking through some PEI newspapers on the net but I can't find them now. John Bentley's web site is at www.jrbentley.com and you will see his Imperial right away. He has more pictures on the engineman's side under "models". You guys out there should check out his tugboat. Simply Amazing. |

I have a 5 HP Imperial and would be interested in a manual or copy. There doesn't appear to be many of these engines around so the market may be somewhat limited.

Here is a 5 HP Bruce Stewart that I restored 28 years ago and didn't keep for various reasons. It followed me home today. It will stay this time.

I think there is a good one for sale in Virginia.
If it is still available there is a possibility of the current owner bringing it as far north as Connecticut in August.
