I have just started an engine restoration on a Buchanan Engine, im thinking its about 1933, and its a baby four (the smallest one available). Im doing the restoration for my uncle, and im doing it in my tech class. Its turing out to be a pretty challenging project since there is no manual to check simple things like tourque specs, and since its an aluminum block i have to be especially careful. I was wondering if anyone was in the same boat (no pun intended). And if possible to send me some information that would prove to be useful. I am aware to my knowlege that this engine isnt really the most common Buchanan available, but any information would prove a huge help. Thanks~Drib...

Are you sure ithe lock is aluminum? The smallest Buchanan I know of is a Midget, based on a British AUstin block ( cast iron).
I'll see if I have the torque specs - I have SOME info on the MIdget.

I always thought the Junior 4 was based on the Hercules IXB-3 and the Midget on the Hercules ZXB-3 block. Can line you up with a NOS gasket set if it is the ZXB you've got. Never heard of them being cast in aluminum. The gear casing, sump and flywheel housing were available in aluminum though, at least on the Junior 4.

With my engine it can be separated from the Cylinder Block, so the crank case is aluminum, if its of any help it has "Tenual" in the side of the engine... Also i hear about this "NOS" gasket, if you dont mind clarifing as to what that is. But any help is a big help!!! Thanks so much, Drib..

Once again, if it could help, after finishing the measurements of the cylinders, the bore is about 2.200in - 2.203in. so when i said small its small. I have yet to figure out the stroke. The only Gasket i need is the copper head gasket, the others can be hand made, which im doing. As the time comes nearer for reassembly i'm starting to get nervous about the absence of tourque specs, even with hours being spent searching the net. Thanks for you help...Drib

Matt,
The pictures of the gasket sets that Robert posted do appear. Do you not see them? If not it may be due to your browser or to a firewall or security setting that you have on your computer.

I can see them. If you still can't send me an email and let me know what browser and what version you use.

My book lists the zxb with a 2 5/8 bore.Thats more than drib says,so that gasket set wont fit?We are talking about a flat head engine?

I see the images now. The engine is speak of is a flathead. To elaborate on what i mentioned earlier. The crankcase is aluminum bearing the name "Tenual" on it. The cylinder block is probably Iron, with the earlier posted cylinder bores. These two parts can be separated. Thanks for all your input, and more is welcome... Much thanks, Drib..

There is a company in Orillia Ontario that owns the remaining parts and litature of the Buchanan Engine Company. They are called Parry Automotive they will be you best bet.

Just to clarify - the Buchanan Midget is based on a Hercules ZXB engine. The Buchanan Baby Four had ratings from 10 - 13 HP and was also known as a Model Y. Though the Buchanan manuals do show these engines, the details are sketchy at best. It appears to have been based on an Austin American engine that was produced between 1930 and 1933. Standard bore for that engine was 2.200. Please feel free to contact me directly at my email address - [email protected] if you have any further questions or have a serial number you would like researched.

Where can I purchase a gasket set like the one pictured above. I have a zxb-3 hercules engine I am about to disassemble and overhaul. I am also looking for a source for rings, main bearings, camshaft, rods, and anything else I might find needing replacement once I get into it.

I am in need of a manifold for a Hercules ZXB, but would consider a complete engine as well. Can anyone help?
