I have an ericson 27 1974 and have just realized I have a palmer p 60 engine. The engine seems to run well but it makes a hell of a racket in reverse I have read in the archives about the transmission adjustment procedure will this cure the noise? I would also love to get my hands on the Palmer manual is it availble anywhere? The PO told me it was an atomic 4 after much searching I was able to get the manual for it but now upon review I see it is almost certainly a plamer thus I need the new manual. It appears that others here are having luck a keeping these motors going, is there anything special I should look into , I have no records or knowledge of hours on this engine other than it is blue and is fairly easy to start . I see most recomendation is to run it around 1800rpm for cruising? Well thanks in advance I can not tell you how happy I was when I found this sight, cheers George |

George,
We sell the Palmer P60 manual at this link.
There are a lot of P60 engines still in use. Sounds like you have aready reviewed some of the older postings that contain some useful information on the engine and parts sources. |

George,
The transmission shift lever must be held with constant pressure in reverse. It does not click into position as it does in forward. Also mine made a groaning noise as I pushed it toward reverse. The noise changed pitch as the clutch engaged getting louder. The engine was very smooth and quiet forward. The engine crosses with an International Harvester tractor BUT many parts are unique to the Palmer.

Eddie's comment is correct it does not lock into position in reverse and it does make gear noise in reverse. Make sure you have SAE 30 weight motor oil in the reverse gear up to about 1 inch below the aft shaft. Don't use a heavy gear oil.
I suggest you read the postings that talk about checking the ignition timing and clearing the air vent line. You may have trouble trying to find the timing marks on the flywheel and its housing for ignition timing. |

I have a Palmer P-60 (eng. # 80398) in my 74 Islander. When checking the transmission, there is a 3/4 inch plug that I removed to check oil level. I used a screwdriver but it came up dry. From reading other postings, I guess the best way to service would be to remove the 6 bolts holding the plate? Thanks for all the info on this site. |
